Abhidhamma lectures - CH, Sayalay Daw Vimalanani:
15 - 17 May 2024

Sayalay Daw Vimalañani (Sasanadhaja Dhammacariya) is a Nepalese nun who has studied and trained with Ven. Sayadaw U Pandita in Myanmar since 1991. She is working as a translator and teacher of Buddhist scriptures in Myanmar and Nepal and guides foreign meditators in Satipatthana meditation in Myanmar and abroad.
The focus of the three days Abhidhamma Lectures will be the process-freed consciousness. That is the occurrence of the consciousness outside the cognitive process on the occasion of rebirth (pati-sandhi), live-continuum (bhavanga) and death (cuti). This consciousness occurs independent of any sense door and is therefore called processed-freed (vithimutti)
The lectures take place in the “Haus der Besinnung” in
Switzerland (https://hausderbesinnung.ch) and
online via skype.
Language: English.

E-Mail:
gotama@xs4all.nlKukkucca, together with restlessness (uddhacca), is known as a mental hindrance for a peaceful state of mind. It is often explained as remorse, regret or the feeling of guilt. Remorse however is concerned with past misdeeds or the lack of good deeds or actions in the past. To a lesser extend, kukkucca is explained as worry, sorrow or even anxiety of the future. This explanation is interesting for us, because in the west, we might be (more) familiar with this meaning.
Don't we know this painful emotion - maybe because we are perfectionists, demand a great deal of ourselves, and cannot easily accept our limits, failures and weakness - or do we just think we are not good enough? Abhidhamma teaches that kukkucca belongs to the aversion group of mental states (cetasikas) and explains why and how it comes into being. This might be the key for us to practically identify it and to deal with it in a wholesome way in order to understand it and overcome it.
Some ways of practice will be explained and guided, including forgiveness, sympathetic joy (muditā) with ourselves, and certainly Vipassanā.

Bhikkhu Atulañāṇa:

Bhikkhu Atulañāṇa is a Sri Lankan monk who is currently staying in Myanmar studying the teachings of Abhidhamma. Ordained in 2014 in Sri Lankan Forest Tradition he studied Pāli scriptures mainly focusing on Vinaya-Piṭaka along with the commentaries during the first 4 years.
He completed the Tripitakācārya exams in 2016 in Sri Lanka and received his M.A. in Pāli in Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (University of Kelaniya) in 2021.

In 2018 he visited Myanmar with the intention of gaining deep and comprehensive knowledge in Abhidhamma. Presently he is publishing a series of Abhidhamma books in Sinhalese based on the knowledge from books and teachings from Myanmar books. Also he is teaching the seventh book of Abhidhamma, Paṭṭhāna and the third book of Abhidhamma, Dhātukathā with the Pāḷi commentaries for a group of Sri Lankan monks, and since a while the key points in English to an international group of students.

Ayya Agganyani:

Ayya Agganyāni (Sayalay Daw Aggañāṇī), born 1954 in Munich, scientist and former secretary general of the German Buddhist Union (DBU), is a German Buddhist nun in the Burmese tradition (Thilashin) and disciple of
Sayadaw Dr. Nandamālābhivaṃsa.
She got a Buddha-Dhamma diploma from the International Theravāda Buddhist Missionary Universtity in Yangon, Myanmar, in 1999. Since then, she is continuing her studies mostly of Abhidhamma and with Sayadaw, also translating his courses into German and assisting him.
She herself teaches, translates and writes on Abhidhamma and Vipassanā.

She had learned and practised meditation in Taungpulu-, Mahāsi- and Mogok-tradition. Today her meditation focuses on Cittānupassanā. But she also loves contemplations (anussatis).
Agganyani lives in Bruckmühl, South Germany, in her "Abhidhamma hermitage", and in the winter months partly in Myanmar (Burma), mostly in
CBS, Sagaing, her teacher's first centre (see photo left).

Unfortunately, in early 2018 she had to give up her secluded forest kuti near Ariyavaṃsa Kyaung in Sagaing Hills (see photo at right) which had fallen victim to the new tourism boom in Myanmar and related deforestation.
In the same year she also gave up her Sāmaṇerī vows after 15½ years, took 10 precepts and lives as "Yathema Thilashin" (hermit nun) now.
